Human Rights Day: Why We Celebrate
December 10th, 1948 marks a pivotal moment in history when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in Paris. This document set out fundamental human rights that are inalienable to every individual, regardless of their background.
Over time, the dedication to human rights has been transformed into legal measures, including treaties, customary international law, general principles, regional agreements, and domestic law, to ensure the expression and protection of human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) has influenced over 80 international human rights treaties and declarations, numerous regional human rights conventions, domestic human rights bills, and constitutional provisions, all of which form a comprehensive legally binding system to promote and safeguard human rights.
