About the Institute

The Institute for Training and Development at IDHR offers courses designed to increase knowledge and awareness of discrimination issues. We offer training for employers, employees, educators, and community members throughout the state.

Our interactive training breaks down complex legal requirements into clear, practical guidance.

We maintain small trainer-to-trainee ratios to ensure you receive personalized attention.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

What it covers:
Helps employees and employers understand how to prevent, identify, and respond to sexual harassment in the workplace.

Who needs this training:
All employers with employees working in Illinois must provide this training annually. Restaurants and bars have additional requirements.

Racism-Free Public Schools Training

What it covers:
Provides guidance on how to identify and report harassment and discrimination based on race, color, and national origin.

Who needs this training:
All employees of public and private elementary and secondary schools, including teachers, staff, and administrators.

Fair Housing Training

What it covers:
Explains fair housing laws and how to avoid discrimination when renting, buying, or financing property.

Who needs this training:
Property owners, managers, real estate professionals, and anyone involved in housing transactions.

How Training is Delivered

We offer training in flexible formats to meet your needs:

Open to the Public Training

Our scheduled training sessions are free, virtual, and open to all. You can register online and join from anywhere. We provide certificates of completion to all attendees.

These sessions are taught by certified trainers with more than 10 years of experience in civil and human rights.

Group Training

We can provide customized training for your organization, company, or agency. Group training allows you to:

  • Focus on topics most relevant to your workplace
  • Train multiple employees at once
  • Schedule sessions that fit your timeline
  • Adapt content to your organization's needs

Customized training requires a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks from your request to the scheduled training date.

Diverse Courses, Customized Training, & Flexible Delivery Option

All training materials are available at no cost. Depending on the training type, you can access:

  • Downloadable presentations and handouts
  • Video and audio training modules
  • Online learning platforms
  • Printed materials for in-person sessions

Some training sessions are available in multiple languages, including English and Spanish.

You can access our model trainings online through our website. Some trainings are available for download as PowerPoint or PDF files. Others are provided through partner platforms like the Ed Leaders Network (ELN).

No. However, you may use third-party training providers if their programs meet or exceed the minimum standards required by Illinois law.

Yes. You may use a third-party vendor, have your own staff deliver IDHR model training, or create your own training program.

You must keep electronic or paper records of all training you provide. These records must be available for IDHR inspection upon request.
